Edition 01: Reconnection
By Alexander Lewis
“The inspiration for this series came from the core beliefs of Sheep Inc. and exploring how to make them come alive creatively. I love that when you buy the sweater you also adopt a sheep. This gives you an immediate connection to the source of the wool. An immediate connection to the ecology, wildlife and ecosystem that makes the sweater possible.”

And This
Sheep Could
Be Yours.
Your very own New
Zealand Merino sheep.
After you’ve purchased your sweater, we will allocate a real-life sheep to you from the farm your sweater’s wool is from. You can track its day-to-day life. Where it is. What it’s up to. When it’s had a haircut. Even whether it’s had lambs.

Why include a sheep? Let’s face it. We’ve lost touch with where things come from. Keeping you up to date with an ovine adoptee is our way of bringing you back in touch. To remind you that every item of clothing started somewhere. In our case, it started with a sheep.

What will you name yours?

Our sweater bag
Made from 100% recycled cotton, with limited edition printed linings, our sweater bag is designed to store your sweater and keep it looking fresh when you’re not wearing it. Which won’t be often. And is especially useful in warmer months when the moths get greedy.
The comb
Our sweaters are designed for life. But looking after it will make it last even longer. We include a sweater comb so you can give it the occasional groom. To get that new again feeling. A little bit of Sunday afternoon relaxation.

We track the sheep’s going on through an RFID tag in it’s ear. And keep you up to date on it’s general life events. From its whereabouts, to when it’s been shorn, to when it’s had lambs. To see where your sheep is al all time, simply tap the trackable NFC tag in the sweater hem with you phone.

It’s our way of bringing you back in touch. To remind you that every item of clothing started its life somewhere. In the case of our knitwear, it all begins with a sheep.

Lake Hawea Station.
Your sheep adoptee will be from Lake Hawea Station (LHS). A stunning 6505 Hectare property in New Zealand’s premier High Country, situated in the Queenstown Lakes district.

LHS aims to develop a new approach to farming that puts the ecosystem first. With this aim, LHS has an ambitious sustainable vision - setting goals to protect and enhance their waterways, conserve and restore biodiversity and introduce regenerative farming practices. Your sweater purchase will contribute investment towards one of their biodiversity projects to plant 100,000 trees over the next ten years.

Middlehurst Station.
Your sheep adoptee will be from Middlehurst Station. A beautiful biodiverse sheep Station covering 16,550 hectares in the Upper Awatere Vally on New Zealand’s South Island.

Middlehurst Station extends right to the top of the rugged inland Kaikoura mountain range. And the rich biodiverse property ranges in altitude from 550 meters to 2,500 meters. Middlehurst’s owners, Willie and Susan MacDonald, moved in with their four kids over 20 years ago. It’s the ideal place to raise a family. And their Merino sheep. All 11,000 of them. Of which yours could be one. The Macdonald’s aim to establish a sustainable productive family farming business. And making sure high-country traditions are maintained and passed on. And most importantly, to continue to raise the bar of how a sustainable and modern farm can function and run.

This project aims to prevent deforestation across 105,000 hectares of pristine rainforest in the Amazon basin, protecting some of the world’s most biodiverse habitats. The project works with communities and local groups to help protect ecosystems services while providing alternative of economic development which avoid destruction of the forest.

Project 2: Menu and Nanyuki Reforestation Project, Kenya
This community reforestation project enables members who are smallholder famers, to voluntarily plant trees on their land only to the extent that they can afford to, as they still use the majority for subsistence agriculture. In addition to generating revenue from the sales of carbon credits, the project delivers multiple UN Sustainable development goals. Providing training and facilities to improve crop production, growing trees as sources of food and medicine, and using wood more efficiently as fuel.

Nearly 50% of farmers have increased their food supply thanks to training on conservation farming. This project is certified and verified to CCB and VCS standards. View Project 1:
Why Merino Wool?
We handpick ultra-fine Merino wool from the happiest New Zealand sheep. Why Merino wool? As well as being soft enough that strangers will want to stroke you, our wool can also look after itself. It’s spent a good few evolutionary cycles learning how…
Temperature regulating
Self-cleaning & zero-odour
100% biodegradable
Temperature regulating
To protect sheep from big temperature shifts between New Zealand winters and summers, their wool has evolved to adapt. Meaning it keeps you warm when cold and breathes when hot.
Self-cleaning & zero-odour
Merino wool naturally repels stains, wrinkles and odours. That means less maintenance for you. All it needs is the occasional breather. Simply hang it up or lay it down flat.
100% biodegradable
Your sweater is made to last a lifetime. But it is also totally biodegradable. Put it in the compost and it will be gone within the year.
Italian-Spun Cashwool yarn
We spin our wool into supremely-soft, zero-itch Cashwool® yarn, at a 150-year-old yarn mill in the North of Italy that runs on renewable energy. Making our knitwear as soft to the touch as cashmere, with the all the technical benefits of Merino.

Spun using 100% renewable energy
In addition to sharing our myopic focus on quality, Zegna Baruffa share our ethical values too. Our yarn is spun using renewable energy and all workers are paid a fair living wage.
Soft as cashmere to the touch
The most common complaint about wool is that it can be itchy. Our unique process spins the wool into yarn that feels supremely-soft against the skin with zero-itch.
Top secret spinning technique
Over the last 150 years, our mill, Zegna Baruffa, have learnt a thing or two about how to spin the softest, toughest yarn. Cashwool® is the culmination of that knowledge.
